Full Review
The story is filled with cliches that we commonly see on other similarly themed dramas, yet they are cliches that are effective in delivering moving scenes that are very relatable especially for every struggling millennial who has the same issues: (1) unrequited love with best friends, (2) the inevitable moment when you have to make a choice and grow and and create a living for yourself and for people who are relying on your minimal income, (3) a job you chose to do for survival, (4) letting go of your biggest dreams knowing they’re just too impossible with your lackluster specs and because they won’t feed you or your family, (5) learning how to swallow your pride even if you’re the proudest person on earth or; (6) simply being an adult without knowing what you wanna do in life. Yup. Been there, done that.
That’s why for the most part of the drama I was able to see myself the most in each of them. Ko Dong Man’s fear in wanting to reach his dreams and the excitement he felt when he finally started again trying to achieve it. Choi Ae Ra’s hopes and disappointments she felt while trying to swallow the criticism towards her lack of experience, no name background and nonexistent specs. Baek Seol Hee’s heartbreak when she felt like her love just stabbed her, how her world crumbled after giving so much and how she came back up a much better person. And Joo Man who lost track of his main goal in life after being consumed by greed and desire to get bigger results and in the process hurting the people he loves.
Their hardships in life are designed to depict our real life struggles no matter how big or small or how serious or trivial it is and that makes the drama all the more amazing. Because most of the time, it’s more relieving to know that we are not the only ones struggling and that through their positive take on life no matter where it takes them give us hope that we can also dream and do the things we wanna do instead of doing something that we don’t want and hating it in the process.
Also, it is commendable that the roles are well characterized in detail that we are able to empathize with each of them. Sometimes we feel like we are Dong Man or Ae Ra or Seol Hee or Joo Man in a way and that makes these roles more human to me. Plus, because of their personalities, I feel like the characters are the driving force of the story instead of relying heavily on the plot and letting it drive the story. It makes everyone feel not one dimensional and instead like true people that experiences joys and struggles, that has their own share of ups and downs, of glory and fall.
I think the only setback about this drama, which somehow removed its characteristic rawness, is Ae Ra’s birth secret. Honestly, they could have gone the route of not introducing her mom at all and it would have been fine, but then they still went thru it and I guess it isn’t so bad besides the fact that’s an overly used trope in dramalalaland.
Plus, although it became pretty obvious at some point that Hwang Bok Hee is definitely Ae Ra’s mother just when they started talking about her and Bok Hee has more screen time, it’s silly they had the time to dramatize this part more than necessary to the point they tried to make us think it’s really Dong Man who’s related to her after those flashbacks and Nam Il starts throwing tantrums after finding out Bok Hee is there in Namil Villa because of her child.
Not saying that part is annoying, just pointing out some small flaws about the last arc of the drama. Nonetheless, though it’s a bit too fictitious and way too far from reality, I think I am able to sympathize towards Ae Ra more because of this revelation about her birth mother. In fact, it made me cry a few buckets of tears when Ae Ra was looking through her mom’s flip phone and found pictures from her childhood she didn’t know she took and it made me laugh and smile when she just starts asking Bok Hee how she must be the daughter of a rich mom only to disappoint herself when Bok Hee said she’s rather waist-deep in debt after her business went down.
Over all, it’s such a good story that’s leaning more on realistic than fictitious that people in their 20s would absolutely relate to.
